Know your Normal Blood Glucose Levels?
Glucose is an essential source of energy for the body. It provides energy to human being which is important for the functioning of the body. Glucose enters the body through foods being consumed by us that are rich in carbohydrates and this particular sugar travels through the bloodstream inside the body. Glucose levels are regulated by insulin and glucagon. Insulin is an important body hormone produced by the pancreas. It is then released into the bloodstream when the glucose levels rises.

To keep the diabetes under control, it is necessary to know about your glucose level. The normal glucose level lies between 70 and 150 mg. The level is usually lower in the morning but after having meals, it rises to some extent. When the blood sugar level reaches above 150 it depicts hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar. On the other hand, the low level can be seen below 70 and called as hypoglycemia. It is also known as low blood sugar and is considered a fatal condition.

There are several symptoms of diabetes in a patient and some of them are lethargy, impaired mental functioning, irritability and loss of consciousness. Long hyperglycemia results in diabetes mellitus which is the most common disease related to the blood sugar level. The disease also results in regulation failure. At times diabetes can be alarming and leads to some fatal diseases like eye, kidney and nerve damage. A blood glucose test measures the amount of glucose present in the bloodstream and monitors the treatment of diabetes and checks hypoglycemia.

Glucose tests are aplenty and among them the most common is the 'fasting blood sugar' test. It checks the glucose levels after an eight-hour fast. The test must show the glucose level between 70 and 99 and at this level the blood sugar level is considered normal. The second kind of test to measure the blood sugar level is the 'two-hour postprandial blood sugar' test and it measures the glucose levels within two hours after eating the meals.

The normal glucose levels after this test must be between 70 and 145. This kind of random blood sugar test checks the glucose level throughout the day and it is done regardless of you having meals.  If the level varies a lot then it shows the patient is heading for trouble. The level must be between 70 and 125 which is considered normal. The other kind of 'oral glucose tolerance test' diagnoses the diabetes and its predicaments.

In such test, the blood is tested after drinking a glucose drink. In any severe condition, it is important to contact a good physician as he will guide the patient and recommend an effective diet plan suitable to his needs. The diet formulated by the doctor controls the rising blood sugar level and provides the necessary nutrients to the body as well as the energy to the patient to work throughout the day. There may be a lot of side effects resulting from diabetes treatment which the doctor must treat as well.
