The Medical Way Out Of Type 1 And Type 2 Diabetes |
|
|
|
Basically, there are three types of diabetes-
type 1diabetes, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes. All of them
are highly individualized problems which have their own specific
solutions.
Along with the medical aid, diabetes treatment
involves lifestyle changes, blood sugar control, and proper diet. Your
health care provider is the best man to render appropriate guidance on
all these aspects, but diabetes treatment is a life long process. Proper
knowledge and information about diabetes and its treatment is of
paramount importance.
Type 1 diabetes
Type
1 diabetes develops when there is a severe lack of insulin, so it's
treatment is bound to concentrate on the production of the same. The
patients suffering from type 1 diabetes are generally required to take
injection of insulin on a daily basis, as part of the treatment. These
injections are usually taken with a combination of short-acting insulin
such as Lispro or Aspart insulin and a longer acting insulin such as
NPH, lente, glargine, detemir, or ultralente insulins.
For better
results, insulin is recommended to be taken in the form of injection.
The reason being, if it is taken by mouth, insulin would get destroyed
in the stomach and would not be able to get into the blood where it is
actually required. It is very necessary to know how to give injection to
oneself. With the help of a trained professional you can learn how to
store and inject the insulin.
Generally, insulin is required to
be taken around mealtimes, 2 to 3 times a day. Dosage varies from
individual to individual and is tailored by the health care provider.
Some
people have their insulin administered by continuous infusion pumps, to
provide adequate blood glucose control. Supplemental mealtime insulin is
programed into the pump by the individual in accordance with the
recommendation of his/ her health care provider. If you have taken
insulin, do eat, as the insulin will bring your blood sugar down
regardless of whether you have eaten or not. Intake of insulin without
eating may lead to the development of hypoglycemia.
Keeping accurate records of blood sugar levels and insulin
dosages helps in the success of the treatment. So, don't miss out on it.
A balanced healthy diet and regular exercise go a long way in
controlling the blood sugar level.
Type 2 diabetes
Type
2 diabetes occurs when the body is not able to use the insulin in a
proper manner. The treatment of the Type 2 diabetes depends on how
elevated your blood sugar and how glycosylated your hemoglobin are, when
you are diagnosed with it. There is a possibility that you may be given
a chance to lower your blood sugar level without the help of any
medication.
If you don't want to opt for injection, the best way
to do this is by shedding weight (if you are overweight). Taking
exercise would be an added excellence.
Try this for 3-6 months.
If the blood sugar levels still remain high, you need to go by an oral
medication, usually a sulfonylurea or biguanide (Metformin). It helps
you control your blood sugar level. Don't skip having healthy diet, even
if you are on medication.
Medication is all about helping you
control your blood sugar level. You may be given a combination of two
types of medications to get your blood sugar level under control.
Nowadays, it has become common for people with type 2 diabetes to take a
combination of oral medication and insulin injections to control blood
sugar.
