Diabetics are suggested certain supplements that
complement medication for diabetes cure. These supplements should be
taken after doctor's consultation. These are chromium, alpha- lipoic
acid, garlic, coenzyme Q10, omega-3 fatty acids and magnesium. Chromium
is available in the form of chromium picolinate and chromium
polinicotinate. It has been found to be effective in patients with type
2 diabetes. But, it also holds certain side effects such as insomnia,
headache and kidney damage. It should be taken with precaution.
Alpha-lipoic acid works as an antioxidant. It could lower the
level of blood sugar to a great extent although it may decrease
concentration of certain minerals such as iron. "Allicin" in garlic
works as the main component. In some cases, it has been found to be
relevant for the treatment of diabetes. It is safe for adults. Coenzyme
Q10 (CoQ10) plays a role in cell's energy production and works as an
antioxidant. It has not been found to be affecting blood glucose level.
CoQ10 is safe for most of the adult population.
Omega-3 fatty
acids are extracted from fish oil, flaxseed oil and borage seed oil.
Omega-3 is important for the maintenance of cells and may lessen the
effects of heart disease. Diabetics are more prone to heart disease and
stroke. So, Omega-3 has been of special interest. Popular supplements of
magnesium are Calcium-Magnesium-Zinc tablets and liquid forms of
magnesium. Magnesium helps the nerves and heart. Diabetics usually
suffer from decreased level of magnesium. It should be taken in low
doses. In Type 2 diabetes, it may lead to complications.
Supplements
should be taken with diabetes medicine. Supplements greatly help in
diabetes care. But, excess dosage of supplement may make diabetes
treatment ineffective. Other supplements may be taken in the form of
diabetes diet and diabetes recipe.
