When a woman during her pregnancy, as a result of hormonal changes in the body gets diabetic, it is known as gestational diabetes. The placenta which joins the baby to the uterus to provide it all the necessary nutrients does not provide insulin resistance to the body which increases as the size of the placenta increases. Though the body produces extra insulin during pregnancy, still it is unable to meet the requirements leading to diabetes. This generally gets cured as the woman is over with her pregnancy but there is no such guarantee that it will not erupt later in life.

Diet plays a key role for any diabetic and thus, in the case of pregnancy it becomes all the more important. The calorie count increases during pregnancy and the main purpose is to have everything in little quantity at regular intervals, which includes mainly vitamins, proteins and minerals, food which is high in fiber and low in fat and sugar. To illustrate it further we can mention the diet for one day in the following way;

1200 mg of calcium (4 servings), which includes dairy products, nuts, green vegetables, ready to eat cereals etc.
30 mg of iron (3 servings) which includes lean meat, poultry, fish, leafy vegetables, iron enriched cereals.
One source of vitamin C in the form of oranges, grapes, tomatoes, mustard greens, broccoli, cauliflower.
One source of folic acid in the form of dark green leafy vegetables, legumes, beans, peas, fruits.
One source of vitamin A which includes, carrots, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, apricots, spinach etc.

Sources of vitamins can be taken in generous amount as it is good to have fruits and vegetables as much as possible, avoiding some fruits which are extra sweet or taking them with additional sweeteners. Avoid alcohol and limit caffeine, do not diet or lose weight during pregnancy which may prove to be harmful for the body and the baby. Extra care needs to be taken for those suffering from gestational diabetes to look for a bright future for the coming one.
