| How to Help Children Suffering From Diabetes |
|
Diabetes mellitus as the disease is called scientifically is brought about by either the insufficiency of insulin or the body’s resistance to insulin. The first type of diabetes is known as Type 1 diabetes and the second type is known as Type 2 or acquired diabetes. Type 2 diabetes very rarely affects a child and it is prevalent only in the adult population. Both these forms of diabetes result in a high blood sugar level and require external medication by insulin and a regulation of diet and exercise. A diabetic child needs to have a support system in place. The child by the age of 7 years should be able to take their own blood tests, and administer injections in cases of emergencies. Such a child should also realize the warning signs of hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia and take corrective action accordingly. The most important thing that is required is to boost the child’s sense of self-confidence and self worth and motivate the child to feel that he or she is not any different from other children. Once this is done in childhood, children will be able to lead a normal life during the difficult teen years and be able to take care of themselves. Related Articles |
