Diet for Diabetic Patients As Recommended by the American Diabetes Association

It is very important for diabetics to eat right to be able to manage their diabetes. So, American Diabetes Association recommends a diet for all those suffering from diabetes. The American Diabetes Association Diet can help you keep your blood glucose levels well under control.

The diet suggested by the American Diabetes Association for diabetes patients is divided into four categories of food items. The first category is of vegetables, including lentils, corn, carrots, green beans, and spinach. The second category comprises of protein rich items, such as dried beans, nuts, fish and poultry. The third category features breads, cereals and whole grains, including bran, wheat, barley, oats and brown rice. The last category is of dairy products that includes yogurt, cottage cheese and skimmed or low fat milk.

The recommended diet comprises of all the necessary nutrients, including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. Carbohydrates provide energy to the body and are abundantly present in whole grain breads and cereals and various vegetables, such as lentils, corn, peas and beans. Proteins facilitate proper growth of the body and present in food items, such as nuts, chicken, fish and low fat milk. Fat is also an important nutrient and is found in poultry and skimmed milk.

Apart from the aforesaid items, high fiber and low glycemic index fruits, such as apples, strawberries, oranges, cherries, plums, grapes, peaches and prunes are highly recommended for those suffering from diabetes. This is because these food items help reduce blood glucose and fat levels.

The American Diabetes Association prohibits the consumption of food items that comprise of excessive fat. This is because high fat and cholesterol in the diet might result in to heart diseases and/or hardening of the arteries. High amounts of fats are contained in several food items, such as whole milk, butter, eggs, meat, and flax seed and olive oils.

The Association also suggests reduction in salt intake as it can increase the blood pressure. Apart from the normal sources, salt can go unnoticed in several food items, such as salad dressings, canned soups and cheese.

The American Diabetes Association also recommends reduction in sugar intake. Food items that contain high amounts of sugar include honey, maple syrup, frosted cakes, pies, table sugar, aerated drinks and breakfast cereals with sugar coatings.

Also, it is advisable to leave out alcohol completely. Alcohol acts like sugar on the body and increases the glucose levels in the bloodstream. You should consult a dietician in case you decide to drink it.

The American Diabetes Association recommends that you work with a dietician and create a personalized diet plan that comprises of food items that you like eating. Additionally, the diet plan should be consistent with your regular eating habits and schedules while you maintain a steady body weight.
