An Optimal Diet Plan For Diabetic

Before determining about the diet for a diabetic, we should know as to what is the condition of a diabetic patient. Diabetes is a condition of high level of sugar in the blood which prevents it from converting sugar, starch and other foods into energy.

A diabetic patient is required to keep a check on his diet constantly to observe that his sugar levels don’t increase above normal which is 90 – 130 before meals and less than 180 after 1– 2 hours of starting the meal.

There are various diet plans for the diabetic depending upon size of body, age, level of physical activity and his sugar levels. Those who have high sugar levels need to control it more and bring it to standard acceptable levels.

Coming to the diet for a diabetic, it should include starchy foods, fruits, vegetables, milk, yogurt, some amount of fats and sweets but all this should be planned with the help of a dietician for better results as we can just list some common basic intakes.
Starchy foods like whole meat and whole grain to keep the blood glucose levels steady (serving 6 and above)
Fruits and vegetables low in fat, high in fiber and rich in vitamins and minerals. The fruits mainly citrus and more of whole fruits rather than juice due to fiber content- (3-5 servings). Vegetables that are dark green and deep yellow in color, such as spinach, broccoli, carrots and others (3-5 servings)
Milk and yogurt are also low in fat but should be skimmed and without any additional flavors.
Meat and others can be taken but fish and poultry are more recommended after removing the necessary fat from it and should be boiled, roasted or baked as frying would add fat.
Safe amounts of alcohol, fats and sweets can be taken as a part of a healthy diet but extra dose is a big no.
