Eat Brown Rice to Manage Diabetes

Rice is one of the cereals that are eaten in almost every part of the world. This grain supplies daily calories to the half of the world's populace. Whilst various varieties of rice are available, it is brown rice that is the healthiest of them all. It is due to the nutritional value of brown rice that it is advised for diabetics. Brown rice can play a significant role to control diabetes. This whole grain forms an important constituent of diet for diabetics.

During the production of brown rice, only the outermost layer of the rice kernel is removed which keeps the nutritional value of the cereal intact. When this brown rice is converted into white rice by various milling and polishing processes, 80% of the vitamin B1, 67% of the vitamin B3, 90% of the vitamin B6, 60% of the iron, 50% of the phosphorus, half of the manganese, and all of the dietary fiber and essential fatty acids are destroyed. This is precisely why brown rice makes for a better choice.

As compared to brown rice, white rice breaks down more quickly. It quickly translates into glucose and increases the blood sugar levels thereby causing a drastic insulin reaction. However, brown rice on the other hand takes longer to digest and does not trigger an insulin reaction. This is yet another reason why diabetics must choose brown rice over white one.

Since brown rice is rich in fiber, it takes relatively longer for the body to digest this food item. This means that brown rice keeps you feeling fuller for longer. As a result your food intake is reduced and your weight remains under check. Keeping weight in control is a must for diabetics.

Further on, brown rice also reduces the nerve and vascular damage that is caused as a result of diabetes. When brown rice is soaked overnight and then cooked, acylated steryl glucosides (ASG) gets into action. ASG is the compound that is actually responsible for the growth of rice. It helps diabetics by normalizing blood sugar levels and also provides body with enzymes that are out of place in diabetes.

The benefits of brown rice for diabetics don't just end here. Brown rice and other whole grains lower the prevalence of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. It must be noted that both these factors are important for diabetics. Whilst insulin resistance is the precursor of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome is a strong predictor of diabetes. This means that consuming brown rice can not just treat diabetes but it can also lower the risks of diabetes and like health conditions.

Considering all that brown rice has to offer, it will only be wise for diabetics to consume this whole grain as part of their daily diet.
