Type 2 diabetes is no longer a health condition that affects only the adults. In fact, the problem is growing at a much faster rate in children than adults. As per the New England Journal of Medicine, 45% of the patients who have been recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are children. But nevertheless, you can help your child deal with diabetes by taking care of what he eats.

Amidst various other causes, obesity turns out to be the most prominent cause of type 2 diabetes in children. To eliminate this cause, you need to take care of what your child eats. While food at home can easily be taken care of, what do you do about the school lunch?

Say no the cafeteria
This is the first and the most important step that you need to take in the direction of providing a healthy lunch to your diabetic child. No matter how much the cafeteria food tempts, it is certainly a no-no for diabetic children. Pizzas, sandwiches, burgers, chicken nuggets etc are some of the most common food items that you will find in the cafeteria lunch.

Besides these foods, the ready to eat variety such as chips, cookies, cakes etc also do no good to your child. All these food items are high on starch and some of them may even contain trans fats. Thus, they make for an absolutely unhealthy meal for your child. Regular consumption of such starchy foods may increase the sugar levels further. Thus, it is only in your child's interest that he/she stops eating at the cafeteria.

Go for homemade lunch
So what does your child eat if the cafeteria is strictly prohibited? Start giving your child homemade lunch. It might just take some time and effort, but it will help maintain your child's health. Give your child whole grain sandwiches, vegetables, fresh fruits, baked or roasted goods and the like for lunch.

Make homemade lunches enjoyable
Even if you are giving your child the healthiest of lunch, chances are that he will still be tempted to gorge on unhealthy snacks. But, you can avoid this temptation by making your child's lunch. One way of doing that could be to give your child options to choose from for his lunch.

For instance, if you want to give your child sandwiches for lunch you could give him several options for sandwiches such as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, cheese and mustard sandwiches, low fat ham, tomato and lettuce sandwiches and the like. If your child has a sweet tooth then you could probably give him homemade cookies, brownies, cakes or sugar free puddings for lunch.
