The Right Diet for Diabetics

If you too have become the victim of high blood sugar level or diabetes, your doctor must have advised you to control your diet as well as take your  medications in time. In diabetes, the level of blood sugar goes up, more than normal. This is primarily on account of certain aspects of the body’s metabolism which malfunction.

Diet plays a very important role in body metabolism, since everything our body needs is obtained  from the food that we eat. In diabetes, excess consumption  of carbohydrates is not recommended. This is because the carbohydrates are broken down to glucose and this adds to the blood sugar levels. It is very essential to control and manage diabetes. Excess levels of blood sugar have serious short term and long term side effects.

What kind of diabetes diets should one follow?
Doctors often prescribe a diet to diabetic  patients. This diet conforms to the standards recommended by the American Diabetic Association. The American Diabetic Association is the apex body which helps disseminates information on controlling and managing diabetes.

Following are the tips for diabetic diet:
Increase the consumption of starch rich and complex carbohydrates as opposed to simple carbohydrates rich in sugar. Whole grains, cereals and bananas are examples of foods which contain complex carbohydrates. Try to consume foods which have added sugar or are made out of refined flour to the minimum extent possible. Foods containing sugar should be limited to one or two servings per week.

Increase the intake of protein rich foods such as lean cuts of meat, chicken eggs and fish. Eat a lot of green leafy vegetables.

Whatever diet one follows diabetes diets one follows, the American Diabetic Association has emphasized that the patient must take equal amount of foods at regular intervals. Instead of having three large meals a day, diabetics should divide their meals into six or so portions per day. This will ensure adequate nutrition as well as ensure a reasonable gap between meals. Short gaps between meals ensure that our blood sugar levels do not fall below the minimum requirement.
