Diabetes Treatment

What’s New Diabetic Medication?

Though Diabetes is an old problem, it is very much curable. It is mainly cured with the help of proper diet, exercises, and weight management, besides a healthy lifestyle. But when the blood glucose levels are very high, medication and injections are also required.

Five main drugs are available, namely, sulfonylureas, meglitinides, biguanides, thiazolidinediones, and alpha-glucosidase inhibitors. They all have the same function to lower down the blood glucose levels, and make the muscle tissues more sensitive to insulin so that it can absorb insulin more properly. They have various dosage and side effects at the same time which vanishes over a period of time.

Apart from them, two new medications have been recently approved by the FDA in the form of injectable drugs known as PRAMLINTIDE, brand name Symlin and the other one is EXENATIDE, brand name is Byetta.

Pramlintide is an injection approved for both Type 1 and 2 Diabetes. It helps to improve the A1C levels without causing hypoglycemia. It rather promotes moderate weight loss. It is followed by the side effect of nausea which improves over the time but cannot be taken with the dose of insulin and should be taken separately.

Exenatide is again a new class of drug and has the same function and side effects as of pramlintide, to control the blood glucose levels and achieve the A1C levels. Sometimes, these injections need to be combined with other oils also, best recommended by the doctor handling the case history of your disease.

The cost of these two new injections differs from store to store. One needs to try a few places to get the lowest rate possible. No diabetic pill or injection is perfect, or it could eradicate the problem from the roots. It is only that it helps to keep the blood glucose levels in control to avoid further complications.
