Oral Diabetes Medications

Diabetes is one of the most serious of medical disorders in the world today! Oral medications for diabetic patients are a good option for people with the type 2 form of the disease. These medications are suitable for people who are obese or of normal weight and with a history of less than ten years of high blood pressure if at all. Somewhere during the course of the disease, such patients may have to resort to taking insulin.

Sulfonylurea derivatives are a class of drugs that are used in the management of type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is characterized by resistance to insulin. These drugs work by increasing the production of insulin in the pancreas. Use of drugs of this category is contraindicated in various situations such as allergy to sulfa-based drugs and advanced liver or kidney disease.

Another important class of medication for managing type 2 diabetes is called biguanides. Drugs of this class inhibit the production of sugar in the liver and can cause the loss of weight. If properly administered, biguanides not only help to reduce fasting blood sugar levels but also are also beneficial in reducing LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and can aid in weight loss.

Certain diabetic medications known as Alpha-glycosidase inhibitors inhibit the absorption of starches and carbohydrates and thus prevent abrupt rise in blood sugar levels after a meal. These drugs thus reduce the impact of ingested carbohydrates on blood sugar levels.  Side effects may include diarrhea and flatulence.

We notice that various anti-diabetic medications except for insulin, work in a variety of ways to keep the blood sugar levels within limits.

Another example of anti diabetic drugs for type 2 diabetic patients is the drugs known as Thiazolidinediones or glitazones, increase the efficiency of the hormone insulin and thus result in bringing the blood sugar level down.

Certain medications promote the secretion of insulin immediately after a meal, in response to the likely rise in the level of blood sugar. These drugs known as Meglitinides are quicker acting than other diabetic medications.
